KU Aerospace Engineering now offers 2 master’s degrees online

LAWRENCE — The Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Kansas is now offering master’s of science and master’s of engineering degrees through fully online courses.

Students who earn a master’s degree online through the aerospace engineering department  will complete coursework, conduct research and participate in industry collaboration to prepare for successful careers.

KU developed these online offerings to meet a growing need in industry for aerospace engineers. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job outlook in aerospace engineering is expected to grow 6% a year for the next 5-10 years.

“These new online offerings allow more students the chance to develop research skills, technical knowledge and problem-solving techniques,” said Rick Hale, professor and chair of aerospace engineering. “This approach provides our students with the skills to design, produce, operate, and support aircraft and spacecraft.”

Award-winning faculty in the department help students build skills specific to their chosen subdisciplines, including aerodynamics; propulsion; guidance, navigation, and control; structures and materials; astronautics; system engineering; design; and crewless aerial systems.

“The required online courses are taught by the same faculty and meet the same educational standards as the on-campus courses, but they offer more flexibility for students to study at times and in places that are more convenient,” Hale said.

KU aerospace engineering is recognized worldwide as a leader in aircraft design. KU aerospace engineering students have won more American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics international design competitions than students from any other school in the world.

Through Jayhawk Global, the university’s education innovation center, KU plans to offer many more online degree opportunities, giving more students the chance to earn a globally recognized degree that signals prestige, quality and career readiness.
