KU Alumni recognizes 10 students with 2026 Tradition of Excellence Awards


LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas celebrated 10 exceptional students at the 2026 Student Leadership Dinner, recognizing extraordinary leaders who are leaving an indelible mark on the Jayhawk community.

Hosted by KU Alumni and the Student Alumni Ambassadors, the awards were presented April 15 at the Jayhawk Welcome Center to honor students demonstrating exceptional dedication to advancing KU’s mission and legacy.

These award recipients have catalyzed meaningful transformation across the university, from elevating academic excellence as teaching assistants and spearheading student organizations to strengthening community bonds through sustained service in Lawrence.

Recipients of the Tradition of Excellence Award exemplify the highest standards of student excellence, each earning recognition for their transformative contributions to KU. The award honors these outstanding leaders with a $1,000 scholarship and a $200 donation on their behalf to a KU Endowment fund of their choice, underscoring the university’s commitment to investing in student leaders who shape KU’s future. Friends, family and university representatives gathered to celebrate these outstanding achievements.

  • Abigail Schneider, senior in community health from Latham, New York.
  • Annalia Escalante, junior in public administration from Kansas City, Kansas.
  • Avery Oppermann, junior in finance from St. Louis.
  • Deborah Eberechukwu Onuosa, senior in computer science from Lagos, Nigeria.
  • Evanna Margret Dominic, senior in chemical engineering and Spanish from Overland Park.
  • Jay Patel, senior in computer science from Gujarat, India.
  • Maddie Meyer, junior in business marketing and sport management from Leawood.
  • Nischay Rawal, sophomore in computer science and mathematics from Overland Park.
  • Tej Gumaste, senior in computer science from Mumbai, India.
  • Zachary Schubert, senior in engineering physics from Lincoln, Nebraska.

About the Tradition of Excellence Award

The Tradition of Excellence Award is KU’s highest honor for student leadership, celebrating individuals who exemplify the university’s core values while creating measurable, lasting impact on the Jayhawk community. Recognizing both undergraduate and graduate students, this prestigious award honors those dedicated to upholding KU’s legacy of distinction while forging innovative paths for future generations. Award recipients demonstrate outstanding achievement across multiple dimensions of student life as mentors and educators, visionary organizational leaders and devoted community partners, each advancing KU’s mission in profound and transformative ways.

The awards are funded through private support raised through KU Endowment’s Class Legacy Walk, an initiative that honors and celebrates the legacy of past generations of Jayhawks with a growing campus walkway near the Ambler Student Recreation Center.
