KU celebrates global connections Nov. 17-21 during International Education Week
LAWRENCE — Home to more than 1,500 international students from 115 countries and sending nearly 1,400 Jayhawks abroad each year, the University of Kansas will celebrate global exchange and cultural bridges during International Education Week, which takes place Nov. 17-21.
"International education opens your world in ways nothing else can," said Nomina Thara Koneti, a KU undergraduate from India studying business analytics. "It teaches you to adapt, appreciate diversity and grow into a more understanding person."
Historically a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education, International Education Week unites campuses nationwide to spotlight programs that prepare American students for a global future while welcoming international talent to study, learn and share cultures with the United States. In Kansas, Gov. Laura Kelly has issued a proclamation recognizing Nov. 17-21 as International Education Week, declaring that "international education, exchange and public diplomacy play a critical role in U.S. foreign relations for today and tomorrow."
Nearly 25% of KU students study abroad before graduation, with last year’s Jayhawks exploring 67 nations — top destinations included Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, Japan and Costa Rica. These experiences aid students in building foreign language skills, broadening their knowledge of their academic disciplines, and developing competencies such as adaptability, cultural fluency and leadership for success in a global workforce.

Koneti's journey reflects the week's spirit and the experience of many international students. Initially overwhelmed, she found her footing with time and the supportive communities around her.
"I've fallen in love with Lawrence and KU," she said. "The people here are kind, welcoming and always willing to help. This experience has taught me independence, emotional awareness and the beauty of diverse connections — lessons that continue every day."
