KU launches Building Bridges summer academy for local, international teens
LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas is launching Building Bridges: KU Global Youth Academy, a new 10-day immersive summer camp that will bring together students ages 13-17 from Lawrence, across the U.S. and around the world. The children and dependents of KU employees are encouraged to participate. A 10% discount on registration rates is available for those employed by KU.
The program, set for July 12-22 on the KU Lawrence campus, brings together area and international teens to experience authentic college life. Participants will live in KU dormitories or commute as day campers, access campus amenities — including dining halls, recreation facilities, libraries and classrooms — and engage in leadership workshops led by KU faculty and staff.
Teens also will collaborate on group projects, attend sessions with college recruiters and take behind-the-scenes tours of academic programs such as engineering, business and art. Evenings will include social activities and games.
A key focus is cultural exchange, fostering lasting global friendships and intercultural understanding.
The initiative is led by KU’s International Short Programs office, a team with more than 30 years of expertise in delivering innovative short-term educational programs that promote global learning and cultural exchange at KU.
“Building Bridges offers young leaders a chance to explore university life, develop essential skills and connect with peers from diverse backgrounds, all while having fun on one of the most welcoming campuses in the country,” said Elizabeth Gould, director of International Short Programs. “We’re especially excited about the opportunity this gives Lawrence-area youth to be a part of this group of global young scholars.”
To help students and families learn more about the program, International Short Programs staff will host informational webinars in the coming months. The first sessions are scheduled for the evenings of Feb. 3 and 5. Webinar registration can be completed at the Building Bridges webpage.
