KU scholars, communications professionals invited to Science Communication Workshop
LAWRENCE — The Center for Digital Inclusion, the Institute for Policy & Social Research and the Life Span Institute at the University of Kansas are co-hosting a science communication workshop designed to strengthen how researchers share their work with the public. The event will take place from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Nov. 14 in the Malott Room of the Kansas Union. Lunch will be provided.
“As the need for accurate and accessible information continues to grow, effective science communication plays a vital role in connecting university research with communities, policymakers and the broader public,” said Hyunjin Seo, University Distinguished Professor, Oscar Stauffer Chair of Journalism & Mass Communications and director of the Center for Digital Inclusion.
The workshop aims to help scholars bridge that gap by bringing together KU faculty, researchers and communication professionals to share strategies, build networks and develop collaborative approaches for communicating science and research more effectively.
John Colombo, director of Life Span Institute and professor of psychology, and Donna Ginther, director of Institute for Policy & Social Research and Roy A. Roberts & Regents Distinguished Professor of Economics, will give opening remarks before the program, which includes:
- A faculty panel session highlighting experiences and best practices in public engagement and research storytelling. Speakers are Jeff Conlin, associate professor of journalism & mass communications; Patricia Gaston, Lacy C. Haynes Professor of Journalism, and Ashley Muddiman, associate professor of communication studies.
- A resource overview led by KU communication professionals, showcasing tools and support available for researchers looking to expand their outreach. Speakers are Jen Humphrey, associate director for strategic communications at Life Span Institute, and Mindie Paget, assistant vice chancellor for impact & belonging and director of communications at KU Office of Research.
- Interactive brainstorming sessions that encourage participants to exchange ideas, identify collaboration opportunities and explore innovative ways to make their research resonate with relevant audiences.
