KU School of Music to celebrate 50 years of piano with special concert

LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas School of Music will celebrate 50 years of its distinguished piano program with a special anniversary concert at 5 p.m. March 29 at the Lied Center of Kansas Pavilion.

This weekend-long celebration filled with performances will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the launching of the famed Artist-in Residence Series at KU, a major event in the history of the piano program that lasted for several years and was organized and started by Richard Angeletti.

The evening will feature a special performance by David Allen Wehr alongside KU faculty and students, highlighting the rich musical tradition and forward-looking vision of the piano program. A master class on March 28 is also scheduled at Swarthout Recital Hall.

As part of the celebration at the Lied Center, the KU School of Music will honor Angeletti, professor emeritus, whose decades-long career at KU left an indelible mark on the piano program. Angeletti, who will be in attendance, is widely recognized for his contributions at KU as a performer, educator and mentor as well as for helping to elevate the program’s national and international reputation.

“For more than 50 years, the KU piano program has shaped generations of performers, educators and scholars,” said Paul Popiel, dean of the School of Music. “This celebration is both a reflection on our history and a celebration of piano studies at KU.”

Since its founding, the KU piano program has fostered artistic excellence, innovative pedagogy and meaningful performance opportunities for students, Popiel said. Alumni of the program have gone on to successful careers in performance, education and arts leadership across the country and around the world.

“As coordinator of the KU piano department, I am delighted to welcome our community to an event celebrating the depth, artistry and legacy of KU Piano,” said Ellen Sommer, piano area coordinator. “This occasion brings together students, faculty, alumni and friends to honor the vibrant piano culture that has long been a cornerstone of musical excellence at KU. This event reflects our commitment to artistic growth, mentorship and the enduring power of music to connect and inspire.”

Additional details about the guest artist and concert program will be announced in the coming weeks.
