Renovations set to begin at Kansas Union
LAWRENCE — KU Memorial Unions has announced upcoming renovations to the Kansas Union, including the Level Four lobby and the Jayhawk Ink space located on Level Two. The union team is partnering with Dimensional Innovations, a design team based in Overland Park.
According to Executive Director Jack Kredo, the updates are a part of the union’s efforts to create a welcoming environment that fosters connection and a strong sense of belonging for the Jayhawk community.
“We are excited to take years of your feedback to offer an inviting space for all visitors to enjoy,” Kredo said.
The renovations are designed to elevate both daily use and encourage special gatherings while honoring University of Kansas traditions and history. Updates to the Level Four lobby will include new floors, updated ceiling coves and a new look for the CoffeeHouse and lounge area.
Changes such as a cozy new fireplace and long community table will help to enhance the space and create more opportunities for collaboration and connection among peers, according to Kredo. The updated lounge area will also feature a media wall with a projector screen and movable furniture, allowing for easy accommodation for groups of all sizes.
As a memorial to the 130 Jayhawks who sacrificed their lives during World War I, the Kansas Union will feature a memorial wall on the Level Four lobby. Each student or alumni will be represented on the wall with a dedicated photo. The area will serve as a special space where the community can stop by and pay their respects, Kredo said.
Jayhawk Ink, located on Level Two of the Kansas Union, is also receiving a fresh new look and will soon be a go–to game day watch spot. Featuring a new media wall with a 90-inch TV and an updated accent wall showcasing an acrylic Jayhawk, the space will offer a one-of-a-kind experience for hosting unforgettable events or watch parties, Kredo said.
Those who are interested can book this space through KU Memorial Unions, Event Services.
Renovations are made possible through student fees allocated by KU Student Senate and minimal disruptions should take place during construction, Kredo said.
“We hope that with these new updates, our Jayhawk community will feel a stronger sense of connection each time they enter our facilities,” he said. “The union is very much the heart and soul of our university, and we want each and every person who enters to feel right at home.”
