A native of Burlingame and a 1969 graduate of the School of Pharmacy, Hotchkiss will be recognized April 24 in a ceremony at the KU School of Pharmacy.

The award honors individuals who have demonstrated selfless and sustained service and leadership in advancement of the pharmacy profession, their communities and the School of Pharmacy.

Hotchkiss started his professional career at KU in 1986 as assistant to the dean and coordinator of experiential education. He earned the title of associate dean in 2003, followed by senior associate dean in 2012 until his retirement in 2020.

Prior to joining the SOP, Hotchkiss worked at an independent pharmacy in Topeka before serving the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services.

Hotchkiss had a tremendous impact on the profession and countless students during his career at KU, primarily through leadership activities and one-on-one advising sessions, according to KU Pharmacy leaders. His mentorship and guidance are directly responsible for many students across generations choosing the pharmacy profession.

He played an active role on a regional and national level with various professional organizations, including his service as the adviser for the school's National Community Pharmacy Association (NCPA) student chapter. During his tenure, both Hotchkiss and the chapter were the recipients of several national awards.

Hotchkiss advocated for and supported students throughout his career. He was the developer of P1 Orientation, P4 Back to Campus Day and many of the School of Pharmacy ceremonies.

A key ingredient to his success was his Kansas roots that fostered an approachability allowing for strong relationships with students, staff, alumni and faculty, according to KU Pharmacy leaders. A 2020 Facebook announcement honoring Hotchkiss’ retirement captured the essence of his impact.

Of the nearly 250 comments, one quote in particular spoke to his legacy:

“Throughout the seasons of change there has been one constant, Gene Hotchkiss. You have been a tremendous ambassador for KU and pharmacy. Thank you, Gene!”
