University of Kansas signs historic strategic partnership with University of Regensburg, marking KU’s first comprehensive international alliance

LAWRENCE — The University of Kansas has formally signed a landmark strategic partnership agreement with the University of Regensburg (UR), establishing the first comprehensive, institutionwide international collaboration of its kind for KU.

Building on nearly two decades of successful cooperation with UR in chemistry and American studies, the agreement expands joint efforts across business, law, economics, engineering, and immunology and cancer research through KU Medical Center. The partnership will encompass student and faculty exchanges, joint research initiatives and Collaborative Online International Learning projects.

“Today, we celebrate our shared history and future,” said KU Chancellor Douglas A. Girod. “This strategic partnership agreement marks an exciting new direction for KU as we begin building a core set of international partnerships. While KU will be Regensburg’s fifth strategic partner, Regensburg is KU’s very first by design and intention. Our shared goal is to build a partnership that leverages our unique strengths in service of our respective missions, visions and values.”

The University of Regensburg, located in the historic city of Regensburg in Bavaria, Germany, is a leading public research university renowned for its medical school, university hospital and emphasis on cutting-edge cancer research. Like KU, UR excels in teacher training, particularly in special education, and prioritizes transdisciplinary research and global engagement.

This keystone alliance reflects KU’s “One KU” initiative to integrate efforts across its campuses and aligns with UR’s established framework for sustainable, evolving and interdisciplinary partnerships. The agreement positions both institutions to address global challenges through shared expertise and innovation.

“This strategic partnership represents a transformative milestone in KU’s internationalization journey — one that positions focused, high-impact collaboration at the center of the university’s global engagement strategy,” said Charles Bankart, vice provost for international affairs and senior internationalization officer. “I am immensely proud of the dedicated teams across the International Affairs Division whose persistence and expertise have brought this historic agreement to fruition. Just as importantly, I am deeply appreciative of the leadership and partnership of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, Office of Research and the KU Medical Center. Working together, we have made today possible and move forward from a position of unprecedented strength.”
