Presenter to discuss science, curiosity and discovery

LAWRENCE — Emily Graslie, chief curiosity correspondent of the Field Museum in Chicago, will discuss science, curiosity and discovery at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, at The Commons at Spooner Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

Graslie is celebrated for her popular YouTube show “The Brain Scoop,” which goes behinds the scenes at the Field Museum. From preparing a wolf skin to pinning insects, or delving into why natural history museums have so many dead animals and plants, Graslie has plumbed the depths of the Field Museum to educate and engage.

Graslie, 25, received a BFA in studio art at Montana and is pursuing a master’s degree in museum studies from Johns Hopkins University. Among her honors, Chicago Magazine named Graslie its “Best Celebrity Nerd” of 2014, noting her job is to “dissect the venerable [Field Museum], opening up its insides to show how it functions.”

The talk is a part of KU’s Common Book programming, which is focused on “The Center of Everything,” by Laura Moriarty. Graslie’s talk is co-sponsored by the Office of First-Year Experience, the KU Natural History Museum, the Spencer Museum of Art and the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications.
