School of Education announces anticipated name change, effective fall 2020

LAWRENCE — The School of Education at the University of Kansas is changing its name, effective fall 2020. Approved by the Council of Chief Academic Officers and the Kansas Board of Regents on April 17, the new name will be School of Education and Human Sciences.

The School of Education has been serving students since 1909, and since then it has experienced a number of changes in different program areas.

“Our current name, School of Education, does not capture the broad range of academic programs that we house nor the scholarly research that our faculty produce,” said Rick Ginsberg, dean of the School of Education. “The difficulty we had was identifying a name that reflects what we do while still keeping the name ‘education’ prominent.”

After taking into consideration the names of schools and colleges with similar offerings at peer institutions, along with feedback from multiple constituents, the School of Education decided on the name School of Education and Human Sciences. In anticipation of the name change, the School of Education also administered an online survey to a variety of stakeholders in November 2018, and the survey results were positive.

“We have a great amount of work ahead of us as we prepare for this change,” Ginsberg said. “But, we are excited to begin a new chapter of our school’s long and glorious history.”

The change to School of Education and Human Sciences will be implemented in a phased approach, completed during the fall 2020 semester. Interested parties are encouraged to learn more and to stay informed online. Information on timelines to support the transition and general next steps in the process will be made available to the public here.

The KU School of Education is a nationally ranked school, preparing educators and professionals as leaders.
