Study finds effective method to help teachers address gap between finding a good practice and getting started
Researchers at the University of Kansas have documented an approach that helps educators address the “know-do gap.” The gap is when teachers and schools know a practice will benefit the students but it is difficult to get started for any number of reasons. The practice helps anticipate obstacles, plan for them and deliver new practices for students.

KU Debate team finishes third at J.W. Patterson Debate Tournament
KU Debate reached the semifinals of the second major national tournament of the season, the J.W. Patterson Debates hosted by the University of Kentucky. Kentucky hosted 127 of the top teams in the country at Sept. 26-29 event, and seven teams from the University of Kansas competed.

KU lands grant to expand research including individuals with disabilities, creating new career pathways
The Kansas University Center on Disabilities has received a grant to help other universities adopt a model of research that includes individuals with disabilities as part of the entire research process. It will also create career pathways for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to work in the research field.

Director brings urgency to production of ‘Silent Sky’
University of Kansas lecturer Michelle Miller enlisted a KU astrophysicist colleague to fire up the cast of “Silent Sky,” to be staged Oct. 3-5 at University Theatre. NSF grant will support new research for pharmaceutical drug discoveries
Zarko Boskovic, assistant professor of medicinal chemistry in the KU School of Pharmacy, has been awarded a $575,000 grant from the National Science Foundation. Tool to help teachers use local climate data, engage students' emotions on topic proves to deepen conversations
Imogen Herrick, a researcher at the University of Kansas, created Community Science Data Talks, a tool to help teachers bring local data on climate change into the classroom. A study found that when teachers used the tool and asked students how the data made them feel, they became more engaged in the topic.

The University Theatre opens its 2025-26 season with “Silent Sky,” playing one weekend only – Oct. 3-5. Lauren Gunderson’s play tells the story of astronomer Henrietta Swan Leavitt, whose research led to a shift in understanding the universe, most notably that the Milky Way was not at the center of it.

KU Debate teams closed out the championship debates in both the varsity and junior varsity divisions in the Bear-Shock debate tournament hosted by Missouri State University. A squad made up of first-year KU debaters captured the top two spots in the varsity division and the top three spots in the junior varsity division.
